The Tring Anglers Junior session – Reservoir Pound - Grand Union Canal
Due to me getting the time wrong in my head I arrived an hour early. This in a way helped as by the time my assistants arrived I was well on the way to being set up.
Tony and Ro were the next to arrive and they brought the bait with them. This is week 13 for me and is the last report for Take a Friend Fishing, I will have another 4 sessions before winding up this years’ hectic timetable.
Over the last 13 weeks we have been kept supplied with maggot and pinkie by Neil at Amesham Outdoor Sports, without his generous support the sessions could not take place as my club budget would not cover tackle and bait for a summer.
Dave and Dick my last 2 assistants arrive and following them the first of our hopeful anglers.
With 2 ‘newbie’s’ on the bank, the show started early at 2:30pm, Tony set about getting them set up and explaining all as he went on. Within in minutes of being in the water they were into to their first fish, one a roach and the other a gudgeon, nothing too big but that could change in an instant. At 2:35pm another 6 arrived so we all sprang into action to get them set up quickly. By the starting time of 3:00 pm we had 12 fishing or should I say, catching.
Today I had a feeling we would get a great response from the many would be anglers of the sports’ future, fine weather and a slight breeze, what could be better for a fishing trip. I started getting the names on the register and as soon as I thought I had them all more would arrive.
By 3:45pm, there were 25 in attendance; many of the parents signed the EA temporary licence form so that they could join in with their offspring.
I had to leave at 4pm this week to drive down to Cornwall to view a property I was interested in buying. As I left my parking space in the car park another family arrived, one I had known for a few seasons. They were amazed to see me high tailing it away from the junior session, something I have never done before, but after explaining the situation they agreed they would be in safe and confident hands with those left on the bank.
Not including this Saturday, we have had 118 people attend 227 times in 12 weeks. Some of these are people who return year on year, who like the way we do things and like a chance to win some tackle in our numerous raffles. One thing for sure, is that once they arrive they know they are among friends who all have the same objective, and that is to learn how to fish. Some of our young ladies have an aversion to touching maggots, so this week they have been introduced to bread and bread punches, and have all caught quality roach using this method. If they wish to hone their skills a little next week they stand a very good chance of beating any of their rivals in the forthcoming match.
My thanks to all who have taken part in National Fishing Week and Take a Friend Fishing and I hope that more clubs take part next year.
I can always say that I and my volunteer assistants are “Taking Friends Fishing”.
