Summer Junior taster session number 12.
Today I was expecting to have a quiet session. Traditionally the August Bank Holiday weekend leaves us short of bums on the bank. Well not so today, 23 arrived slowly and soon the lower pound was almost full. I was thinking I would have to move some on to the next pound. The session started at three pm and everyone was catching smallish fish, so it was time to start taking the roll call. I knew there was one of the new families above the bridge be cared for by Dick Pilkinton, but when I went up to put their names on the register, I found anglers right along the bank to the next lock. This was indeed another good turnout for the TTA.
On days like this when there are a lot of people I usually run a raffle, so for today’s prizes I put up a 12foot match rod with reel along with a 3, 4 and 6 metre whip. I need to raise a little cash in the next few weeks as we spent a fair amount last week on the food for the bbq. Nearly every one bought a few tickets. One of the parents had been enquiring as to what tackle should be bought for their son Ben. To date he had a 3 metre whip and two rigs that had been given to him by the EA at one of their nationwide events this year. I gave them a landing net and handle, one of the things I suggested they buy, really all they needed was a rod and reel.
I must tell you all about a generous donation made by KC Tackle of Leighton Buzzard. Whips, rigs, landing nets and handles given, yes you heard me right, given to me to use as match and raffle prizes. So today’s raffle hd a bit more to offer.
Also this week I have received a large parcel from Take a Friend Fishing, filled with T shirts, badges, goodie bags and very useful instructional DVD’s aimed at the new to fishing.
Another Ben joined us today, he’s a local lad who usually fishes the Tring reservoirs with his dad, he has been keen to attend since he visited the session I held last week at Wilstone. This week I picked him up with the least amount of tackle I have ever seen him with. He helped set up the whips and rigs and then started fishing himself. He caught a few roach and perch and then got snapped up by something bigger. He had no idea that his normal quarry was present in this narrow little canal, so set about re-arranging his tackle to a feeder and fished with the tip for the rest of the session, he didn’t catch anything big but enjoyed the afternoon and is joining me on the reservoir pound tomorrow for another session, this time with the general public.
Oh I forgot to say, the lad who needed a rod and reel did actually win the same in the raffle. Everyone left content with the day.
