Nephew's First Fish - Nicholas Conroy
I took my 11 year old Great Nephew fishing last Saturday to Yaddlethorpe Ponds, Scunthorpe. He had been fishing a couple of times before but had never caught anything, something I was keen to put right on the day. We started off with an old favourite, float fished maggot just off of the bottom, and it wasn't long before the float started to disappear and he experienced his first tight line. Sadly it sped off into the water lilies and managed to escape him, a brief glimpse enabled me to identify it as a tench.... it would have been a fine first catch, but alas it wasn't to be. A switch to hair rigged luncheon meat soon saw the float diving away and this time... success.... A common carp of a little under a pound became one of the fish he would remember the most in his life. Two more commons, biggest 2lb 14oz, and a crucian fell to the same technique. Another change in tactic, with some bread on the surface, yielded another common carp before it was time to pack up and head home for a well deserved tea.
It's fair to say he really enjoyed the day, apparently he said to his mother, "Mum, next time you have a day off.... can we go fishing?" :o)
